MIDLAND RAILWAY REBUILT 1876 (KIRTLEY ERA ORNATE)

This is the starting point for LMS builders plates in that even though letter font and size changes, this is the oval on which the MR based its later plates. The MR introduced these oval rimmed builders plates during the era of Kirtley, this being the oldest surviving REBUILT plate and the oldest MR buildersplate known. Again it is thought these started to be fitted in the 1870s1870s. The same 3 fonts are used as on the MAKERS. Made in Brass only.
These wonderfully attractive plates are thought to have stopped being used around 1887 when Johnson introduced his 'improved' makers plate. This example was dug up from the site of derby erecting shop during demolition.
