AN OVERVIEW OF BUILDERS PLATES FROM CREWE BUILT LOCOMOTIVES POST 1923

Crewe works produced many hundreds of locomotives for the LMS and BR and in doing so fitted what should in theory be a very much standardised set of builders plates. Far from it in reality with some 11 patterns being encountered so far of both built and rebuilt varieties. The interesting thing is that there are still some patterns to find in my opinion. I have included the BR standard patterns (and even they're not that standard) here as I believe they are derivatives from the LMS regime and ultimately trace their ancestry back to the MR Johnson plates not only in size but in hole pitch etc. Crewe appears to have produced plates in Iron, Steel, Brass and Bronze. I wiil deal with each pattern of plate individually, as a group they look like this-
